Dr. Sabita Manian, Associate Dean, Lynchburg College of Arts and Sciences, School of Social Sciences and Professor of International Relations and Political Science, University of Lynchburg
India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, rode a wave of Hindu nationalism to a historic reelection in 2019. The Modi government has inflamed the relationship with neighboring Pakistan - both nuclear powers - with their unrelenting anti-Muslim hate politics and the status of the Kashmir region. How will the Modi government’s virulent Hindu nationalism affect economic and political security, both domestically and globally? Does this nationalistic turn in India signal the global rise of illiberal democracies?
