The LWVLY co-sponsored The Insiders Briefings on Redistricting Reform programs with Brian Cannon, Director of ONEVIRGINIA2021 on August 28 at Riverviews and August 29 at Holy Trinity Church.
Helen Wheelock, ONEVIRGINIA2021 local “quartermaster”, booked the venues, procured refreshments, and hosted the events. The LWVLY aided with publicity by sending email invitations to members and community organizations, posting flyers, and in the News & Advance calendar announcements. Personal invitations were sent to members of City Council and the General Assembly and to candidates for election to the General Assembly by ONEVIRGINIA2021. About 65 people, many from the surrounding counties, attended the sessions.
Cannon graciously acknowledged the LWV’s long standing support for ONEVIRGINIA2021 and redistricting. He explained what he calls the hybrid redistricting commission, the 5 Step process to amend the VA state constitution, and responded to questions about the likelihood of eventual success. SL306 received strong bi-partisan support: Delegates Garrett and Byron both voted yes. The exact same bill must be passed by the General Assembly in 2020; if it does it will be on the Nov. 2020 ballot. As Cannon pointed out, the make-up of the 2020 General Assembly will be a crucial factor in passage of the second reading of the amendment resolution.
As Leaguers we can help educate voters and lobby our representatives.
See ONEVIRGINIA2021.ORG/AMENDMENT for details and sign up to help at the polls in November. Remember, this is a non-partisan effort!! .
